IN THA BEGINNING...THERE WAS RAP brings together the hip-hop superstars of today to cover the classic Rap cuts that started it all. The tracks hark back to a time when the music was a bit less sample-heavy; Wu-Tang Clan's take on "Sucker MC's" by Run-DMC reminds the listener just how sparse those early tracks were--often little more than a beat and some lyrics. For the most part, the new versions maintain a loyalty to the originals that seems borne of historical reverence. Snoop Doggy Dogg swaggers his way through Too $hort's "Freaky Tales," and the Def Squad provides the album's most straightforward-sounding cover, the Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." Cypress Hill uses "I'm Still #1" to provide updated shout-outs to its contemporaries. IN THA BEGINNING...THERE WAS RAP serves as a trip back to the days of human beat boxes and burgandy windbreakers. It also provides some schooling for those fans who are too young to remember.
